destination

a change of just a few degrees at the beginning of a voyage brings you to a completely different destination. My destination today.

Ordinary

Always, after stormy and unsettling times, the peace of everyday life is a balm for the soul. Wrapped in a blanket I watch the day begin anew.

Unexpected

A chilly windy sunrise with a hot cup of tea. Not what I expected this July morning, but my heart is happy with the surprise.

Endlessness

Meandering along the boardwalk reveals more blossoms than I had thought grew by the sea. We are all NOT the same, (how delightful!), and,

we ARE all the same. Same hurts, same desires, same hopes and same needs. My daily challenge is to love all things equally, and in that developing compassion, find the love I need for this work in progress.

Beach Stones

Yesterday we went to the cemetery, as we do several times a year, to visit, to remember, to place stones on the graves of ancestors and friends. Since this family has spent generations by the sea, we bring beach stones to mark our presence here. Anyone who sees them knows that these people reside in the hearts of their descendents forever.

Disappointment

Disappointment has two sides, doesn’t it? I wanted to go with them but knew it would be too much for me. I had been looking forward to the smell of the ocean as we explored the island’s windy scape. I wanted to see the mainland from miles at sea, accompanied by gulls screaming overhead. I just wasn’t ready to be away from home for an entire day.

While they were gone I drew in my sketchbook, read a book about knitting socks while walking through the Scottish Highlands, took a nap with Sammy, and sat on the porch  watching a downpour. Each moment glistens in its own way, and I saw. The quiet helped me see that each moment is worthy of cherishing whether something spectacular is happening, or something simple is unfolding in front of me in its own time. Simple pleasures.

Grey Day

The sun is always there, even on a cloudy day. Peace is always within us even when life look bleak or scary. This ocean and this beach have been my life companions. I grew up here, my grandmother baked here, my grandfather sold real estate here, my mother and her sisters courted here. My grandchildren play here amongst their ancestor’s breath and memory, and now, we sit and watch the sea together, wrapped in generations of love, here.
