One Last Night

imageToday is their last day, so last night they wanted one more paddle. It’s been that sort of week: one more dinner out; one more chance to stay up late; one more big treat: 6 Flags! We’ve had a spectacular summer. We always do, because we create, and share, and listen to each other. We read, we cook, we argue and we hug each other goodnight. Simple is best, and I am content with simple.

Lake

imageJust a few lazy days left. They swam and dove and made new friends, I read and gazed at clouds. And then we went home to cook dinner together. It’s been a summer of simple fun and easy days, and I’m going to miss them so.

‘Tis a Gift

We drove up to Canterbury Shaker Village yesterday. I wanted to show them the beauty and simplicity that my mother loved so much. As Shaker antiques dealers, my parents loved Canterbury and the last two remaining sisters there. “I think the whole world should be like the Shakers,” he said. “We should be quiet and simple.” This ten-year-old speaks from his heart.

Disappointment

Disappointment has two sides, doesn’t it? I wanted to go with them but knew it would be too much for me. I had been looking forward to the smell of the ocean as we explored the island’s windy scape. I wanted to see the mainland from miles at sea, accompanied by gulls screaming overhead. I just wasn’t ready to be away from home for an entire day.

While they were gone I drew in my sketchbook, read a book about knitting socks while walking through the Scottish Highlands, took a nap with Sammy, and sat on the porch  watching a downpour. Each moment glistens in its own way, and I saw. The quiet helped me see that each moment is worthy of cherishing whether something spectacular is happening, or something simple is unfolding in front of me in its own time. Simple pleasures.
